Tour Ehrwald - Zugspitze

This photo report describes the walk from
Ehrwald (Austria) to the Zugspitze. The walk
can be realized in one day, if you walk briskly.
However, if you want to enjoy the beautiful landscape,
you can take the opportunity to spend a night at
Knorrhütte.

And here we enter the route. At the bottom terminal
of the Ehrwalder Almbahn in Austria.

The train ride takes us to Ehrwalder Alm.

After arriving, it looks like a pleasant stroll.

But the journey goes on, and it becomes steeper. And
for this gravel it is recommendable to put on some
solid foot-wear.

Picture 4: The way to the Zugspitze

On the way to Zugspitze
we receive a view to a wonderfull landscape ...

Picture 5: Beautiful alpine scenery on the way to the Zugspitze

... in almost untouched nature.

Picture 6: Untouched nature on the way to the Zugspitze

And after a short climbing tour ...

Picture 7: The way to the Zugspitze

... we cross the border,

Picture 8: The way to the Zugspitze - Border crossing Germany/Austria

And on the German side continues
our tour towards the Zugspitze.

Picture 9: Beautiful alpine scenery on the way to the Zugspitze

After a while we see our first place for a rest
in the distance - the Knorrhütte (see arrow).

Picture 10: The way to the Zugspitze - Close to the Knorrhütte (Knorr Hut)

Here we can stop for a short snack,
here there are beverages,
even here we can spend the night.

Picture 11: The way to the Zugspitze - The Knorrhütte (Knorr Hut)

And from now on we go uphill ...

Picture 12: The way to the Zugspitze - Shortly after the Knorrhütte (Knorr Hut)

... and the way continues uphill.
A hard path to the Zugspitze.

Picture 13: The way to the Zugspitze

Getting near to the top, even in August,
there is waiting there for us,
partly snow ...

Picture 14: Snow-covered ways to the Zugspitze

... partly rock.

And we will be facing
yet another place for a rest,
Sonn Alpin.

Picture 16: The way to the Zugspitze - Sonn Alpin

From here, we can decide to take the cable car
to reach our next resting place (see yellow arrows),
or carry on to take the footpath (see red arrows).

Picture 17: The way to the Zugspitze - Cable car Sonn Alpin

We decide to take the footpath.
The path goes first over a scree slope ...

Picture 18: The way to the Zugspitze - Scree at the foot of the fixed rope route

... and then comes the actual via ferrata.

Picture 19: The way to the Zugspitze - Start of the fixed rope route

Almost on the top.

Picture 20: The way to the Zugspitze - The fixed rope route

And when we get to the top of the fixed rope route,
a view into the valley
on the other side of the mountain.

Picture 21: The way to the Zugspitze - View into the valley

But we have not yet reached our targets.
First of all,
we have to cross over this mountain ridge.

Picture 22: The way to the Zugspitze - The ridge

Also a small break is considered.

Picture 23: The way to the Zugspitze - A bench on the ridge

And the next longer break awaits us here,
at the Münchner Haus.

Here we see many people without backpack.
Because both the cog railway Zugspitzbahn
and the cable railway reach this point.
And also the already mentioned cable car
to Sonn Alpin.

Picture 24: The way to the Zugspitze - Münchner Haus (Hut)

But we have not yet reached our destination.
We leave the safety area and enter the Jubiläumsgrat.

Picture 25: The way to the Zugspitze - The last stage / Jubiläumsgrat

First we move downhill ...

Picture 26: The way to the Zugspitze - The last stage / Jubiläumsgrat

... and then uphill again.

Picture 27: The way to the Zugspitze - The last stage / Jubiläumsgrat

And because that the trains
brings a number of people to Münchner Haus,
the last stage of our tour is very populous,
and there is one or another tailback.

At the last part of our via ferrata one sees
many brave ones without any safety equipment.

Picture 28: The way to the Zugspitze - The last stage / Jubiläumsgrat

In a little while our target will be achieved.
We are just a few metres away from ...

... the summit cross of the Zugspitze
